A Little Bit Easier

About Me

Hi, I’m Douglas Turet and I have led an amazing life!

(It didn’t always see that way, though.)

I was lucky enough to be born into a family of high achievers who had high expectations of me. The only catch was that I arrived with crossed eyes, learning disabilities and a host of other physical challenges, all in the years before any of them were well understood. That made it a scary and confusing time, because I often fell short of their and others’ expectations, and back then, it was commonplace for kids to receive some pretty harsh reminders if they didn’t toe the line, including public beatings and humiliation. At the end of third grade, I was shipped off to a hellish year-round “school and camp” where physical and psychological abuses were commonplace. As you can probably imagine, my years and summers there didn’t exactly boost my confidence and self-esteem, but they did constantly drive me to find or create better outcomes for myself and, eventually, others.

On the positive side, I’d inherited an endlessly curious and ridiculously creative mind, so whenever I hit a dead end (or someone or something hit me on mine), my mind went into overdrive to try to figure out constructive ways around it. And because those crossed eyes and other challenges didn’t make me the most popular kid, I had a lot of time to figure things out on my own. However,

It’s not what happens to us, but what we do with it that matters!

Along the way, it was up to me to decide whether to remain “the inferior, unwanted one” or to disregard others’ definitions of me and instead focus on the things that I was (or could eventually be) really good at.

Choosing that second option opened up two huge pathways for me:

1) It gave me a sense of purpose (and insights and a kind of optimism I had never known before) and

2) It gave me the power to choose and define who and what I could be or become, on my own terms, anytime I chose to do so, without having to care what anyone else thought.

And that's the key: RE-defining What's Possible, rather than just accepting the limiting beliefs and of those around you!

Within a year of making that choice, I went from being the kid nobody wanted (except to bully or put down) to the young innovator that people wanted to hire as either a speaker, consultant or instructor, and new possibilities and opportunities began opening up left, right and center, so I tried a bunch of ‘em on for size!

And guess what?!

I was truly awful at most of them! But I kept at it and turned out to be pretty good at few of them of them, and so amazingly good at one or two that people started asking, “Hey, can you teach me how to do that?”, or “Could you make one of those for me?”!

Now, sooner or later, most things run their course, but when any product or service of mine was no longer in demand, I’d just stop and re-define what’s possible for myself!

In the years since then, I’ve not only designed and created half a dozen companies and literally hundreds of new products and processes, but also helped hundreds of people just like you to live easier lives.

So, if you could re-design and completely re-create your life, where would you start? What would you change first?
